Ex-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was arrested in relation to the 1MDB corruption scandal earlier this week by anti-corruption officers. This came as no surprise to many, as Najib remains embroiled in a widening corruption investigation, which also saw officials wheeling treasure troves of luxury handbags, jewellery and cash out of Najib’s apartment.
In the most recent news updates as of July 9, it has been reported that Najib has paid the full sum of his bail of RM500,000 (SGD168,000), with the help of his children. When he arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex with his wife Rosmah Mansor, he was greeted with supporters chanting “Bebas Najib!” (translating to: Free Najib!). Najib continues to deny all allegations, and it seems that the astute politician has not been done in yet. Rumours have surfaced that he continues to meet up with loyalists within the government, and supporters have also taken to crowdfunding to free their leaders.
