Following Pakistan’s acquittal of Asia Bibi’s blasphemy conviction, her husband Ashiq Masih has come forward to claim he is in great danger. Bibi was accused of blasphemy after a heated religious argument led to her being on death row.
Following the historic ruling, the hard-line Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) party has taken to the streets of Pakistan, resulting in widespread protests throughout the nation. In a video message, Mr Masih has called on the UK, US and Canadian leaders for safety away from Pakistan, fearing for his family’s life in his homeland. This comes after Pakistan’s authorities struck a deal with TLP in a bid to ease tensions – resulting in Bibi being barred from leaving the country.
Chair of UK’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Tom Tugendhat said he has asked the UK Home Office for an “urgent evaluation of the situation”. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s information minister informed members of the press that security had been “beefed up” to protect Asia Bibi.
