Like straight out of a movie, Arkady Babchenko, a dissident Russian journalist who was reported murdered in Kiev on May 29, showed up the next day in the televised briefing about his very own murder. Turns out the 41-year-old critic of Putin was in an elaborate plot together with the Ukrainian authorities. The critic successfully thwarted a Russian assassination attempt on him, and 29 unnamed others (looks like someone has a flair for the dramatic). Funnily enough, The Russian Foreign Ministry cordially expressed its happiness that Babchenko was unharmed, but asserted that it was an anti-Russian smear campaign by the pro-Western Ukrainian government. Russia isn’t the only one unhappy about what happened, with Reporters Without Borders condemning the staged event asserting that the Ukrainian authorities had no grounds to ‘play the truth’.
