The Elections Department (ELD) plans to introduce electronic voter registration in time for the next General Election (GE), which must be called by January 2021. A tender for the equipment required is expected to be called later this year. The current registration system involves election officials searching for and striking off a voter’s name from a physical copy of the polling station register. Under the new workflow, the official will instead scan the voter’s NRIC to register them. The equipment itself will not be connected to the internet for cyber-security reasons. Though the Government had previously announced plans to introduce e-registration for a few constituencies during the Presidential Election last September, it did not materialise due to completely forseen circumstances.
