In America, Horizon Air employee Richard Russell managed to steal an Alaska Airlines plane and crash it into a near-deserted island. He stole the 76-seater empty plane all on his own and flew it despite not holding a pilot’s license. As if the story were not dramatic enough, Russell was tailed by F-15 Eagle jets for over an hour until he ultimately crashed the plane with him being the sole casualty.
This incident raised concerns about airport security. While this was not classified as terror related, a similar event in the future could lead to great harm. Aviation security in America focuses on securing the airfield. Since Russell was in uniform, had the proper credentials and security clearance to be in the area, he did not arouse suspicion. The cause of the crash is still not known but his family says that his “intent was not to harm anyone”.
