Malaysia wants the judgement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Pedra Branca to be overturned after it discovered new documents in the British Archives. In case you forgot (probably because you were still studying for the PSLE), the ICJ ruled that Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore on the 23rd May 2008, ending a 29-year long conflict. The newfound documents could indicate that in the past, Singapore’s highest officials did not consider Singapore to have acquired Pedra Branca from Johor. The ICJ has scheduled 4 days for the public hearings over the course of 11-22 June. Pedra Branca holds geo-strategic importance to Singapore, extending Singapore’s naval influence in the eastern entrance of the Strait of Singapore. The strait is a key channel for international shipping with more than 900 ships passing through it daily. Considering Pedra Branca’s importance to Singapore, the original legal team who won the island for Singapore in 2007 will be fielded for the ICJ hearing.
