MORE MONEY ‘FLIES’ AWAY FROM PASSENGERS WITH AIRPORT TAXES

Written by Ashley Koh

The new Airport Development Levy (ADL) will require passengers to pay $13.30 more in departure charges. Similarly, aeronautical charges for both passengers (not counting transit passengers) and airlines will increase by $2.50 for every subsequent year for 6 years starting from 2018. With the increase in fees aimed to avoid rapid escalation of costs in the future, departure charges will increase from $34 to $62.30 by 2024. Taking effect from July 1st, 2018, the taxes are meant to help fund airport developments, such as the new Terminal 5, a third runway and related infrastructure in Changi East. Anticipated to be operational in 2030, Terminal 5 is expected extend the airport’s handling capacity, taking up to 70 million passengers a year, more than Terminal 1, 2 and 3 combined (probably because strange Singaporean students love to study there).
