Based on Resolution 2397 that was adopted unanimously on 22 Dec 2017 by the UN Security Council, Singapore has revoked all work permits held by North Koreans in the country. The adoption of Resolution 2397 was in response to the launch of our favourite rocket man’s big and shiny ballistic missile on 28 Nov that year. The Resolution sought to tighten sanctions on North Korea by limiting fuel imports, trade and the ability of its citizens to work overseas. It mandated that all member states repatriate all North Korean workers in their jurisdiction no later than Dec 2019. This move comes with great concern that the foreign currency generated by North Koreans working overseas are used to support their Great Leader’s nuclear endeavours.
