NOBEL PEACE PRIZE IN HONOUR OF ACTIVISTS AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Written by Adib

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to anti-rape activists Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege for their efforts towards bringing about an end to the use of rape as a weapon of war. An Iraqi national of Yazidi descent, Ms Murad fell victim to the ISIS regime in 2014, where she was kept as a sex slave and was raped by ISIS militants. After escaping, she turned to activism, campaigning on behalf of the Yazidi minority in Iraq to bring about an end to human trafficking and the use of rape as a weapon of war. Denis Mukwege on the other hand is a surgeon and gynaecologist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He heads the Panzi Hospital in Eastern Congo, which treats thousands of women each year, most of whom have been victims of sexual violence.
