In the aftermath of his surprise defeat at the recent general elections, Najib has much more to worry about than just his political standing. The new government, headed by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has since opened investigations into the 1MDB scandal, and police have conducted multiple raids on Najib’s high-end home in Kuala Lumpur.

Authorities seized 284 boxes of designer handbags and 72 bags of cash, jewellery and other valuables, making Najib and his wife Rosmah “really unhappy”. Najib continues to fervently deny the allegations surrounding the 1MDB, and claims the valuables were gifts from friends and belongings of his family members. News of the raid spread like wildfire across the country, and many Malaysians have since turned up at Najib’s property to see the cordon around Najib’s house and posed for selfies with the blue police tape. Both Najib and Rosmah have also been barred from leaving the country. Could this be time for their reckoning?
