Written by Ching Yee Jong

With gold medals finally around their necks, all the members on the Korean football team in the Asian Games have earnt exemption from their nation’s mandatory military service. Twenty-one months of military service is compulsory for all South Koreans between ages 18 to 35, but exemptions are offered to athletes who win gold at the Asian Games.

Son Heung-min captained his side and he was one of the three over-aged players selected by the new coach to participate in the competition. The result of the final would decide the fate of all the Koreans on the team. Both South Korea and Japan battled it out for the full 90 minutes, but neither had been able to break the deadlock. It was during the extra time when goals started to come from both sides. Son inspired his side to a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
