In a Cabinet reshuffle expected to happen this month, three veteran ministers are expected to step down, namely Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang, Information and Communications Minister Yaacob Ibrahim, and Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say (phew he might finally have what he has wanted since 2011). While it is not clear whether the three will retire from politics altogether, their shift to the backbench allows younger ministers to go into new portfolios that prepare them for bigger leadership roles. In addition, the three potential candidates for Singapore’s next Prime Minister – Mr Heng Swee Keat, Mr Chan Chun Sing and Mr Ong Ye Kung – are expected to take over roles in Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Defence, and Ministry of Finance respectively. This is so that each will gain more experience and exposure to different aspects of running the country.
