After the Malaysian General Elections that sent UMNO reeling in shock over its loss of its 60-year long rule, UMNO elected its new president, former Malaysian DPM Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to give the party new direction. With over 150,000 delegates voting throughout Malaysia in an electoral college system, Datuk Seri Zahid won the majority vote of 99 out of 190 divisions. So, what’s next for UMNO? Well, Datuk Seri Zahid’s priority is to invigorate UMNO by first reuniting his defeated opponents that ran against him in the UMNO presidency. He also doubled down on his stance on Bumiputera policies, insisting that UMNO must remain a Malay-only party and reinforced the need to intensify pro-Malay policies to ‘better serve Malaysians’.
