VIRTUAL SINGAPORE: THE SKY IS THE LIMIT FOR BOTH PLANNERS AND…PLOTTERS

Written by Yao Quan

Created by real-time big data, Virtual Singapore is a 3D digital model of Singapore as a Smart Nation initiative. Virtual simulations could analyse how Singapore will fare under various conditions. For example, “live” data like air quality, temperature and noise data could be used to simulate urban pollution and help in formulating mitigating strategies.

The potential uses include optimising solar energy collection with studies into the amount of sunlight at every location in Singapore. Another way it can be used includes “live” simulated test driving of driverless vehicles.

DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam said it would be ready by end 2018. It would be available first to government agencies before being publicly released.

National Research Foundation (NRF) Director (Programmes) George Loh said it would be safeguarded against terror groups, especially after a series of recent cybersecurity breaches, including the SingHealth data breach. Various watch groups have also voiced out concerns over privacy, surveillance and security.
