It sure was an unexpected moment as Kim and Trump shook hands on 12 June, but what made it all the more surreal was that this historical meeting was held right here in Singapore! Spending S$20 million on the summit, Singapore pulled out all the stops for the two leaders, ensuring smooth proceedings by maintaining public order by arresting protesters (as always) – we even brought Kim on a tour around MBS and Gardens by the Bay, and celebrated Trump’s birthday with a huge birthday cake. Opinion is definitely divided on the money spent, but market experts gather that the summit has brought this little red dot to the spotlight, with the coverage potentially generating S$200 million in publicity. Politically, Singapore has also continued to display even-handedness in bilateral relations by bringing two conflicting countries together for talks. This definitely reiterates the importance of Singapore to the international scene despite its size.
